A day out with the Community Sub Group

Img_0459
At Castle Vale school we have school council reps in each form. In addition there are 4 sub-groups one of which is Community. This group has engaged with the Inter-Generational Group in the community. This event with the over 50’s is the first of a range of activities that will bring old and young together in a positive and enjoyable way.

We arrived at 10:00am in the morning at first I was a bit apprehensive as I thought that I wouldn’t be able to start a conversation with anyone.  But as it got later I started to talk with members of the community and I really enjoyed it. We met many people and it is really good to talk to elder people of the community as you can learn a lot from an older person.  My favourate part was doing the line dance ‘badly’ but I enjoyed it I would love to do it again, then me and Myles had to take photos of our experience of the day at the residents club. We also had the job of giving out free bingo cards to people.

Jessica and Myles from Castle Vale School took these photos.

(And the video clip. We notice Geoff and BJ and Sally are hiding their undoubtable line-dancing skills.)

a photo walk

Walk
After school, our group went our in pairs for a short walk around the estate. We stopped every 5 minutes and took a photograph looking in different directions. We selected some of the images to make a photo sequence of the local landscape.

Working with photoshop

The first image is my two tone picture. I first took a picture using a plain background and a lamp to create light in certain areas. Once I uploaded it onto the computer I used a tool on Photoshop called Stamp to turn it into a two tone picture of red and white. Then I chose to draw this picture on a bigger scale and then paint in the red areas. I think this picture worked really well because of the colours I decide to use and how the light and the dark are in stark contrast to each other.

Other members of the group also undertook this exercise.

Response to Gallery visit

Following the visit to see the Steve McCurry show at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the group worked on some portraits inspired by his use of colour. Here are some examples

scattered showers

Cv1
Sunny earlier in the day, it began to pour down as we were about to set out on a photo session, so the group stayed within the school grounds, learned to use the cameras and did some introductory photoshop work. Here are some of the images made by Dan, Jodie, Shannon and Luke. Spot the originals.
