Me, You, and Everything Else

Me, You, and Everything Else

About the Project

Insertaboutproject

Me, you and everything else is a photographic project organised by Active Arts Castle Vale.

We are working with two youth groups in the area, one from Castle Vale School, one from The Sanctuary youth centre, and older participants through Castle Vale Community Housing Association sheltered housing.

The Castle Vale estate is on the eastern side of the Birmingham conurbation. Originally the site of an airfield and aircraft production in the Second World War, it was designated for post-war overspill housing. Work began on building a new estate in 1963. This estate was then completely redeveloped in the 1990’s by a Housing Action Trust.

For this project, we will be looking at life on the estate as it is lived today, and this blog will help tell the story of the project, and share some work in progress.

The groups will work with artists Brendan Jackson and Geoff Broadway to learn how to express their ideas through photographic imagery, and how to take the pictures that will tell their own story, to the practicalities of uploading, editing and printing. Together, participants will create a portrait of the estate as they see it, and of themselves or friends or family.

This project will lead to an online gallery, a printed publication and a small touring exhibition – we’ll keep you posted when these things will appear!

Mediabox enables young people to create media projects and get their voices heard. It has given disadvantaged 13-19 year olds, and up to 25 if they have learning difficulties or disabilities, living in England the opportunity to create media projects about issues that matter to them, from film and journalism to digital media and campaigns. Mediabox is delivered by a consortium led by First Light and Media Trust in partnership with Skillset and the UK Film Council. Over 17,000 young people have benefited from the scheme since it was launched in 2006.
